WORKSHOP: Sweetgrass Basket Making
This time-honored craft, brought to the Sea Islands from Africa, has been passed down from generation to generation. Each community has its own unique style of basket weaving. In this workshop you will learn the basics of this Gullah tradition that you can take home as a keepsake.
A means of communication for the Underground Railroad, the art of quilting has been passed
down through the generations. In this workshop you will learn how to make a quilt square. Once completed, you will be able to take home a treasured piece of this Gullah tradition.
WORKSHOP: African Print Adinkra Symbols Workshop
The Instructor will provided information about the history of Adinkra Symbols and their use today. A presentation of some techniques used to create with the Adinkra Symbols. Each participant will have the opportunity to create a take away project using one of the techniques learned.
LEST WE FORGET
An educational segment of the Gullah Festival where festival goers will have the opportunity to listen to informative panel discussions or presentations on heritage. These sessions become very special because audience members have an opportunity to become involved by asking questions and participating in meaningful discussions about our past, how it directly relates to our present, and how it will affect our future. These sessions are free to the public. All ages are welcome. They will be held on Friday and Saturday between 11am to 3pm.
